It is not often, or ever, that a retirement village includes a weekly housekeeping service in the monthly levy – and yet much to the surprise of many potential purchasers, this is the case at Helderberg Village, the scenically located estate in Somerset West established in 1987. 
Allow us to introduce you to the manager of the Housekeeping and Laundry Services department. From a short perusal of management cv’s it is plain to see that quality recruitment is key to the estate’s success and Craig Hendrikse, Housekeeping and Laundry Services Manager is no exception. 

Craig’s job, entailing the management of 126 Housekeeping staff and 12 Laundry Services staff, is sizeable. Together with an assistant manager and 7 supervisors, his team deliver weekly housekeeping and laundry services to 1000 Helderberg Village residents, but with 16 years as a hotelier in some of the Western Cape’s finest four and five star establishments, he is well qualified for the task. 

Craig who began his hotel career as a banqueting and conference barman, and ended it as an Executive Housekeeper, believes that success in the hospitality industry should comprise a genuine care for people as well as a broad range of operational experience.  

“My passion for working with people has taken me to both four and five star establishments including The Spier Hotel, The Victoria & Alfred Hotel, Hotel Le Vendome, Franchhoek Country House and Villa’s, and Lagoon Beach Hotel. 

“Due to hard work and dedication, but most importantly as someone who wanted to expand my range of experience, I was fortunate to have been given the opportunity to manage many different positions namely Front Office, Guest Services, Housekeeping and Restaurant operations,” says Craig. 

As a manager at Helderberg Village, Craig is rewarded by the many encouraging words of thanks and praise by the Villagers for the service delivery of his team. And to get the job done, he looks for staff who are respectful, reliable, patient and attentive.

Craig, whose view on retirement has changed drastically in recent years says that the Villagers have shown him that becoming a retiree certainly doesn’t mean gathering dust like an old book on a shelf.
